Like our customers, we want packaging to be reduced, reused or recycled in order to shrink its environmental footprint.
That’s why the SQDC offers a container and packaging recycling program across its store network. With this initiative, which is complementary to selective collection, the SQDC is helping to limit the amount of waste that ends up in landfills.
To take part in the initiative, customers only need to put their empty cannabis product containers and packaging in the dedicated collection bins in any of our stores. All product packaging sold at the SQDC, including tubes, jars, bags and vials made of any material, can be returned. Note, however, that beverage containers for products in the ready-to-drink category are part of the deposit-return system and should be taken to locations that accept money-back containers. The returned packaging is then picked up by our partner Metro Green Logistics when it delivers cannabis products to our stores. This reduces the program’s environmental impact because the vehicles carrying the returned packaging aren’t making a special trip.
When a sufficient amount of packaging has been amassed at Metro Green Logistics warehouse, it is then delivered to our Québec-based recycling partner Go Zero for sorting and recycling by material type.
Though it’s always best to return the containers and packaging purchased at the SQDC directly to one of our stores, learn how some can be recycled at home.
Materials recyclability is a complex subject. Not all glass, paperboard and plastic packaging should go into the recycling bin. And cannabis product packaging is no exception to the rule.
