It’s vacation time! Here are a few tips for enjoying yours responsibly.

Did you find the winter long? After several months of confinement, do you itch to take advantage of all that summer has to offer (while respecting the rules in place)? Here’s some useful advice if you’re thinking about using cannabis during your summer vacation.

It's vacation time

Cannabis in public places

Preparing for a day in the park? You should be aware that as of January 1st, 2020, the new provisions of the Cannabis Regulation Act prohibit smoking or vaporizing cannabis in any public place, whether indoor or outdoor. You can click here to learn more.

U.S. Customs

Even though the Canada-United States border is still closed to all non-essential or discretionary travel, travel by air is permitted. If you’re planning a visit south of the border, you should know that having cannabis in your possession is prohibited by law in the United States. And while several states have legalized cannabis, the product remains a controlled substance under federal law. So, be sure your bags don’t contain cannabis in any form. At Trudeau airport, you will find amnesty boxes for disposing any cannabis products you may have on you before going through U.S. customs. Click here for more information on Montréal-Trudeau International Airport and here for information about travelling abroad with cannabis.

What about camping?

Ask the people in charge of the campgrounds you visit whether you’re allowed to use cannabis on site, as the grounds are private property. Ditto if you rent a chalet. Be sure to get the skinny by asking the owner or manager (click here to find a suitable camping destination fast).

If you plan to spend time in a SÉPAQ park, you should know that smoking cannabis is strictly forbidden in all public places and inside all buildings and other infrastructure on land managed by the SÉPAQ. Smoking cannabis is tolerated only in places designated as for your exclusive use. For example, it is allowed at your camp site nine and at a distance of more metres from your cabin or ready-to-camp, as well as inside your tent, recreational vehicle or any other camping equipment that belongs to you. Click here for the complete details of SÉPAQ’s cannabis Policy.

Where to buy cannabis?

Only the SQDC is authorized to sell recreational cannabis in Québec, either in one of our stores (see the Stores section for the locations and opening hours) or directly online (see the Products section). Before buying cannabis through another website or a medical cannabis dispensary, you should know that such products are illegal and that the organizations are operating on the black market.

Limits on cannabis possession

Whether or not you’re on vacation, the limits on cannabis possession remain the same. You can have no more than 30 grams on your person and no more than 150 grams at home, irrespective of the number of adults living under your roof. If you visit one of our stores, you’ll find that the cash registers do not allow sales of more than 30 grams per transaction. Our website won’t let you buy quantities in excess of that limit either.

Occasional users: opt for small, low-THC doses

Do you use cannabis but only occasionally? Then you should opt for small doses that contain low amounts of THC and adjust the quantities as needed to obtain the desired effect. If you’d rather not smoke, you can buy various types of cannabis oil products in our stores and on our website; these will let you experience effects without smoking. Feel free to ask for assistance from one of our in-store advisors, who will recommend the most suitable product for you based on your expectations.

Stating the obvious

We remind you that it is, of course, illegal to drive in the hours immediately following cannabis use. Also, store your products in closed containers and away from children. And don’t let kids eat to any edibles that contain cannabis; the consequences for them could be serious.

The entire SQDC team wishes you a restful, sunny vacation.
