Why and how to store your cannabis

In a perforated plastic bag, in a transparent jar under your dresser, in the freezer, next to the stove: too often, cannabis is not properly stored between uses.

So why should you worry about how to store your cannabis? For two very good reasons: improper storing can cause your cannabis to lose its freshness, and it can be a safety concern for other members of your household.

This article serves as a mini guide filled with simple and efficient ways of storing your cannabis products and protecting the people around you.

Why and how to store your cannabis

Proper storage for optimal freshness

So you’ve purchased a few cannabis products and now you need to find a place to store them. But where? How? In what kind of container?

All our products come in airtight packaging featuring a tamper-proof seal. On the back of our products, you’ll find the recommended storage methods and packaging date, which adhere to Canadian standards in terms of cannabis packaging.

Generally speaking, these are the factors to look out for:

  • Temperature
  • Moisture
  • Light
  • Ambient air

Temperature

Temperature

We suggest storing your cannabis in an environment that is slightly below ambient temperature, meaning between 19 and 21 degrees Celsius. When temperatures climb to between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, mould is more likely to occur.

Inversely, when subjected to low temperatures, trichomes, the small particles that give cannabis its taste, weaken and erode more easily. The freezer is not an ideal place to store your cannabis, as condensation will form and lead to mould.

Moisture

Moisture

We recommend storing your products in an environment with a moisture level between 60% and 66%. Some producers provide moisture regulators to insert into your jars. You can also purchase some yourself in smoking accessory shops or at the SQDC. To learn more about moisture levels, read our article on the subject. .

Light and ambiant air

Light and ambiant air

Contrary to the plant itself, which needs lots of sun to reach maturity, light, or prolonged exposure to it, can compromise the integrity of the harvested product. As a result, the taste might be altered, the product might become dry, and the terpenes might erode.

Storing your cannabis in a sealed container will allow you to recreate an ideal environment in which to store it. The best container to store your product is the one it originally came in. However, you can also store it in an opaque or transparent airtight container, such as a glass jar, and keep it away from the light.

Proper storage for the safety of all

Safety

Properly storing your cannabis products isn’t just a matter of keeping them fresh, it’s also a question of prevention. Make sure your products are:

  • Kept out of reach of children and pets
  • Clearly labelled in terms of composition and concentration
  • Kept apart from common household items (especially food)

In the event of intoxication, contact emergency services immediately.

In conclusion

Cannabis, in any form, is a complex product that needs to be properly stored in order to maintain its freshness. Ideally, store your products in an airtight container in a relatively cool, dry place, away from light. In addition, make sure your cannabis is stored in a safe place away from children and pets.
